Community Spotlight: My Mom, Samatra Taylor

To kick off our first community spotlight, I introduce my mother, Samatra Taylor. From this woman, I received my tenacity and perseverance, my love of cheesecake and steamed crabs, my appreciation for a great sale, and the joy I get from overloading my kid’s faces with smooshy kisses.

ONE IMPORTANT LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED AS A PARENT
“Patience and time management- “patience is a virtue,” they say but I’ve learned that there are a lot of things that go into having patience that I never really knew before becoming a mom. Patience is being able to step back and assess the situation when it comes to having kids. Are they trying you because they just are, or to see what they can get away with, or is it because they really need or want something. Once you step back calmly and assess the situation, you can approach it so that your child can understand why you said what you did or why you reacted the way you did.

YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT
My greatest accomplishment is having the ability to provide for my family while they were young. Becoming a single mother wasn’t easy. It’s never really easy, even when there are two parents in the same house. But God blessed me to be able to provide for them in all manners at that point in my life. They are grown, healthy, and happy. They know I brag about them all the time because I’m so proud of being able to raise them to be the young adults that they are.

WHAT SONG WOULD YOU SING AT KARAOKE?
“Been Around the World” – love, love, love that song. I actually won at a karaoke singing contest with that song.
